Spend two nights in the Geothermal wonderland of Rotorua not far Elliot the Dragon’s home in the Redwood Forest. You’ll find Rotorua to be a magical place as you see the great sprays of steaming water explode into the air and pools of bubbling mud churn like enchanted cauldrons. It’s also a great place to experience authentic Maori culture.
Fly an hour south for a two-night stay in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city and home to the Weta group of companies. Among these, Weta Digital played an important role in bringing Elliot the Dragon to life. Here you’ll enjoy a tour through a dedicated area of Weta Workshop, seeing the weapons, costumes, props and armor from The Lord of the Rings, Avatar and more. Your tour also includes a behind-the-scenes documentary showing and an informative drive through Wellington where your driver will highlight iconic film sites.
After arriving in Queenstown, take a tour of the region’s The Lord of the Rings filming locations. You’ll witness gorgeous views along the shores of Lake Wakatipu as you travel from one set location to the next. With three nights in Queenstown, you’ll even have time to add-on a day trip to the small town of Tapanui (Pop. 900), which was transformed into Millhaven for Disney’s Pete’s Dragon.
