Celebrate the release of Disney’s Pete’s Dragon with a trip to New Zealand
Disney’s Pete’s Dragon may take place in the sleepy American Pacific Northwest logging town of Millhaven, but like The Lord of the Rings‘ Middle-earth and The Chronicles of Narnia, the magnificent landscapes in the film belong to New Zealand. New Zealand is arguably the best place in the world for visitors to step inside a living film set. You can experience stunning landscapes, not just as screen backdrops but as real places where you can immerse yourself.
Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, shot over both New Zealand’s main islands, showcases the country’s diverse landscapes. With this New Zealand Movie Set travel package, you’ll visit the cities that played key roles in the production Disney’s Pete’s Dragon and other famous films.
By Hobbiton Movie Set
Begin your New Zealand Adventure in the country’s largest city, Auckland. Arrive early enough to explore the city while still leaving time to rest and relax after your flight. The following day, take a coach from Auckland to Rotorua; just sit back, relax and take in the dramatically diverse landscape. On your way, you’ll stop at the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves and the Hobbiton Movie Set, the picturesque location for the Shire from The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.
Spend two nights in the Geothermal wonderland of Rotorua not far Elliot the Dragon’s home in the Redwood Forest. You’ll find Rotorua to be a magical place as you see the great sprays of steaming water explode into the air and pools of bubbling mud churn like enchanted cauldrons. It’s also a great place to experience authentic Maori culture.
Fly an hour south for a two-night stay in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city and home to the Weta group of companies. Among these, Weta Digital played an important role in bringing Elliot the Dragon to life. Here you’ll enjoy a tour through a dedicated area of Weta Workshop, seeing the weapons, costumes, props and armor from The Lord of the Rings, Avatar and more. Your tour also includes a behind-the-scenes documentary showing and an informative drive through Wellington where your driver will highlight iconic film sites.
After arriving in Queenstown, take a tour of the region’s The Lord of the Rings filming locations. You’ll witness gorgeous views along the shores of Lake Wakatipu as you travel from one set location to the next. With three nights in Queenstown, you’ll even have time to add-on a day trip to the small town of Tapanui (Pop. 900), which was transformed into Millhaven for Disney’s Pete’s Dragon.
