(Day 3 to 11) Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Tour

Travel from New Zealand’s highest peak through glacial-fed lakes, grasslands and past limestone cliffs all the way to the shores of the South Pacific Ocean. This trail is a World Heritage National Park and is the longest continuous ride in New Zealand. If you’re looking for iconic New Zealand scenery – you’ve found it!

Day 1: Catch your shuttle from Christchurch to you accommodation in Twizel – a small lakeside community at the foot of Mt Cook. Have some fresh salmon or trout pulled straight from the water, or take a hike along the Twizel River with views of Mt Cook

Day 2: Board the morning shuttle for the short drive to Mt Cook Village and board your helicopter for the flight over the Tasman River and the start of the Alps 2 Ocean trail. Traveling across a glacially-fed braided river by helicopter with Mt Cook in the background would be a great day, but the alpine views from here to Braemar Road are the cherry on top! Distance: 35 kms/22 miles.

Day 3: Ride on quiet country roads along Lake Pukaki with sweeping views across the lake to the Southern Alps. You’ll cross the dam and then fall into the Pukaki Flats – an area of wide golden grasslands characteristic of the region. Distance: 42 kms/26 miles.

Day 4: This section of trail follows the Twizel canals to the southern edge of Lake Ohau. You’ll meander around the water’s edge under the supervision of the Ben Ohau Range. Distance: 38 kms/24 miles

Day 5: This morning you’ll make a steady climb to the high point on the Alps 2 Ocean trail at 900 meters. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views across the basin back towards the mountains and be followed by bubbling streams into Omarama. You can opt for a short side trip to see the Clay Cliffs. Distance: 45 kms/28 miles.

Day 6: Leaving Omarama you ride into the Waitaki Valley and follow the off-road trail to the top of the Chain Hills. After a short descent, you’ll follow Lake Benmore to Pumpkin Point. The lake and valley views keep pace with you as you descend into Otematata. Distance: 24 kms/15 miles

Day 7: Today’s section of trail has a deep hydro history and you’ll cycle along backcountry roads of Lake Benmore and Lake Aviemore. Take in the spectacular views of the Waitaki Valley from the top of the Benmore Dam and cycle through to Kurow. Distance: 44 kms/27 miles.

Day 8: Today a river runs through virtually every step of your ride today. After riding through a vineyard, you’ll cross the Otiake and Otekaieke rivers on your way to Takiroa Maori art rock site. From there, you head down to the Waitaki River before passing through the Duntroon Wetlands. Distance: 28 kms/17 miles

Day 9: Today pass the Elephant Rocks before riding through farmland in advance of the Rakis Railway Tunnel. Follow the sealed road down to Oamaru Gardens and into town where the trail ends at Friendly Bay on the Pacific Ocean. Distance: 54 kms/33 miles.
