(Day 3) - Day Tour, Art Deco Vintage Car Tour

The original town of Napier was levelled by a dramatic and devastating earthquake in 1931 but was completely rebuilt within a remarkable 2 year period in the contemporary style of the times; Art Deco. Relive the glamour and style of the jazz era with a luxurious vintage car tour.

You’ll be met by your driver, in Art Deco costume, who will provide a fascinating commentary as you are driven in style, through Napier and surrounding areas. You’ll learn about the earthquake that destroyed the city, hear stories of the people that led the rebuild, and discover the Art Deco style. En route you will stop in Ahuriri and visit one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand, the National Tobacco Company building. You’ll then step back in time as you drive through the residential suburb of Marewa, meaning ‘gift from the sea’ in Maori. This suburb was built entirely on land that rose from the sea in the 1931 earthquake and is filled with 1930s style homes.
You’ll return to the Art Deco Centre or your central Napier hotel filled with a new appreciation for the city and the people who survived New Zealand’s worst natural disaster in modern times.

(Day 4 to 8) - Tour Package, Hawke's Bay 5 Day Easy Explorer

Meandering around and between Napier and Hastings, the Hawke’s Bay Trails are a river and coastal network of pathways stretching over the Heretaunga Plains. Explore picturesque coastal communities along Cape Kidnappers with views of Te Mata Peak and the ocean. Look for endangered birdlife at the Ahuriri Estuary along the Pacific Ocean. Visit cellar doors at numerous award-winning wineries.

Day 1: You’ll be picked up this morning for a bike fitting before you’re off! You’ll head out of Ahuriri where you’ll see kids fishing and boats unloading their catch. Follow the coast past a popular surfing beach and visit the Crab Farm Winery with its bohemian style. The trail then continues through a working sheep farm before joining the Estuary Trail where you see protected birdlife and the Old Embankment Bridge. You’ll cycle into Taradale for the night. Distance: 25 kms/16 miles.

Day 2: Today, cycle the Puketapu Loop – a real favorite with locals and visitors alike. Follow the Tutaekuri River which is shaded by pine trees and the smell of wild fennel perfumes the air. Make your way through kiwi orchards to the iconic Puketapu Pub where you can have lunch before crossing the river for your ride back to Taradale. Along the way you’ll pass the historic Otatara Maori Pa site, wineries and a chocolate factory. Distance: 25 kms/16 miles.

Day 3: Rejoin the Tutaekuri River trail and cycle through beautiful orchard, market gardening and vineyard country. Cross the bridge into the wetlands and then into Oak Avenue which was planted in the 1860’s as a driveway to one of the area residents. Spend the afternoon along the “wineries ride” sampling wine and enjoying the ambience at area cellar doors. You’ll then be transferred to Havelock North for the night. Distance: 40 kms/25 miles.

Day 4: Today’s route follows one of New Zealand’s classic road rides through the Tuki Tuki Valley. You’ll make a gentle climb before descending into the valley and past Craggy Range Winery. You’ll make your way back to the coast to a seaside community that has long been home to artists. Have lunch at one of the fine wineries in the area before being transferred back to Havelock North for the evening. Distance: 30 kms/19 miles.

Day 5: Follow the Tuki Tuki River Trail through apple orchard and vineyard country. See the orchardists trimming the trees and maneuver through frisky cattle as you make your way towards the coast. Watch the flocks of black swans at the East Clive Wetlands and have a glass of wine in Clive before continuing on the trail with stunning views towards Cape Kidnappers.
